ABSTRACT

During the life of a building, it will go through many changes but many

of these will be unseen; they will be settling, flexing and swelling and

shrinking from the very first day that work begins. The act of building is

very much about the assembly of materials in a particular pattern in

order to produce a structure that will be useful. This act relies onmateri-

als being able to stick together, whether through joints and connections

or through the inherent properties of the materials and the jointing

materials.
