ABSTRACT

Whether we view ourselves as individuals with moral values we have worked long and hard to clarify, or as novices just starting out on this journey, we nonetheless believe that the search for moral principles to guide our lives is personal – something that we by and large control. Of course we acknowledge our debt to our families, to our communities, and to the traditions that have influenced us. But most of us still expect a relatively clear field of play when it comes to determining our own beliefs.
