ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Sabri Khan in action as the master of many disciples as I was privileged to experience and record it. It starts with the ritual of shagirdi (discipleship) when Sabri Khan made me his disciple and thus inducted me into his circle of disciples both inside and outside his family. The formal ritual is followed by encounters with other disciples and joint practice sessions, all of them taking place under the ustad’s (master teacher) wide-ranging guidance in overlapping combinations with different emphases: from conversations with his oldest and his youngest disciple to common practicing and, in the next chapter, a set of teaching sessions focused on my learning efforts. All of this takes place in the changing scene of the music room.
