ABSTRACT

In 1984 Ustad Sabri Khan taught me all summer, creating for me an intense and comprehensive learning process. Starting from the competence I had from my earlier study of the sarangi, he began by teaching me a raga (marubihag) and at the same time integrated into this teaching the very basic practice routine that his junior students shared, attending to flaws in my bowing and intonation. At first, Sabri Khan was cautiously assessing my commitment and ability. The teaching sessions that follow are the beginning of his commitment and show in a most remarkable way the holistic concept of his teaching that encompasses the whole range of concerns for a sarangi player, from playing the notes in tune to shaping a performance. A most crucial dimension is composition or how to create the structure of a raga improvisation into the form of a classical genre. Finally, Sabri Khan seriously addressed my future as a sarangi player in North America.
