ABSTRACT

It is perhaps fi tting that the most horrendous confl ict in human history ended under the most appalling circumstances. One last, desperate German off ensive in the Ardennes in December 1944 became for Americans the costliest engagement of the war in Europe, and in the months ahead the fi ghting became increasingly tough as the Germans were pushed back behind their own borders. Finally, in the last month of the war, the Allies uncovered the death camps-an atrocity on a horrifi c scale.
