ABSTRACT

The music business in the United States has been going through many changes and reevaluations during the past five years. During the late 1980s the introduction of the compact disc allowed the industry to experience a tremendous amount of growth. Not only did the retail price of CDs rise from the LP-cassette price of $10 retail to $15 to $19 but the major labels were also able to recycle a tremendous amount of catalog product that had gone out of print. Many consumers wanted to replace their scratchy long-playing records or tangled-up cassette tapes with the new format.
