ABSTRACT
Defining just what the word Europe signifies is an essential first step in gaining an understanding of the workings and idiosyncrasies of the music industry in Europe. Back in the 1970s U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger famously asked, “If I want to phone Europe who do I call?” Through his now-famous quote he was referring to the fact that although Europe existed as a defined concept in most people’s minds it was, in fact, a less than unified collection of countries each with its own currency, language, culture, legal system, tax regime, political system, trade regulations, customs, traditions, and so on.
