ABSTRACT

Cable News Network (CNN) was the rst twenty-four-hour cable news service in the United States. Richard E. “Ted” Turner III, founder of the Turner Broadcasting System, launched CNN in 1980. Turner challenged the dominance of the news operations of the three broadcast television networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC, with news programming that was available twenty-four hours each day and seven days each week. Despite initial disparagements of CNN as the “Chicken Noodle Network,” it became a dominant force in news coverage, particularly international news.
