ABSTRACT

Gestures themselves are very powerful, and there is a whole school of acting that uses what is termed the 'psychological gesture'. Each of these generates different characteristics in actors, and they can develop a complex gesture that sums up part they are playing in one physical bit of business. This can be used in performance, or at very least done in wings, or off-camera, to get you instantly into their character. Another way of developing different patterns of movement is to copy an animal. Pick one animal, and try to walk in the same manner, and see how this different way of moving can give actor a whole new set of attitudes and feelings. Moving from different centers is a good way to develop different characterizations. This, and walking from centers, is good examples of acting from outside in, where the exterior situation feeds an internal discovery. Study paintings or photographs of the type of person they are to play.
