An American patient would be likely to have entered a hospital through the agency of a private medical practitioner who had admitting rights in a particular hospital rather than via a public dispensary. In contrast, it would be most unusual for a Chinese person to enter the hospital as an inpatient other than by first attending a dispensary, probably situated within the hospital compound.2
