ABSTRACT
For incarcerated women, theatrical sites of terror exist both inside and outside the walls of prisons. Women’s high incidence (over 50 percent) of physical and sexual abuse prior to incarceration attests to the social terror of their lives outside of prison. Brutal prison conditions often replicate prior abuse, reinventing and reinforcing spectacles of terror within America’s gulag.
