ABSTRACT
Mathis was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the first of four children. As a child and young adult, she enjoyed reading her books on an iron fire escape suspended above the back yard. The books of Black writers were greatly appreciated in Mathis’s home, and she had the additional advantage of watching her mother draw pictures and create poems.
