ABSTRACT

“Good books—fiction and nonfiction—written for, by, and about African Americans are needed if we are to help young readers develop a healthy self-image and an open attitude about other cultures different from their own. That is my goal. To reach it, however, I begin by writing an appealing story. When youngsters have an enjoyable reading experience, they are most likely to choose a similar book … and another. By providing interesting and lively written materials for children, the above goal can be achieved.”
