“I love introducing children all over the world to all the different aspects of African-American history, folklore and culture. I love picture books because they are a challenge to convey complex ideas in a simple form for children. I really enjoy factually and vividly presenting history in a thirty-two or forty-eight page book. It’s wonderful to be able to hold a child’s attention and teach them something important.

“Picture books are a child’s first step into a lifetime of reading. That’s why I feel that my job is important. I want to write about history in such an interesting and exciting way that the memory of reading my book and the information it contained about a particular historical event will linger with them for a lifetime. I love children and I like to write books especially for them. I really love writing books. I enjoy that wonderful feeling you get when you have a great idea and can’t wait to get started to work on it. I enjoy thinking about all of the children that have read my work. I have books in Africa and England and other places. It’s fun to think that someone, somewhere, is reading one of my books or checking them out of the library.

“Most people think I’m funny. I like to make people laugh. I really, really like to make kids laugh. It’s one of the happiest sounds in the world.”
