ABSTRACT

Breinburg was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, South America. In 1965, she received a diploma in English from the City of London College. She attended Avery Mill Teachers College from 1969 to 1972 and Goldsmith College in London from 1972 to 1974. In Paramaribo, she taught school but was also a factory worker, a postal clerk, and a nurses’ aide. She worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross and the Girls’ Life Brigade in Suriname, lectured in creative writing, and was an outdoor storyteller in London. For about two years, starting in 1972, she taught English part time.
