ABSTRACT

Roy was born in Trinidad, West Indies, and grew up with two cousins and a vivid imagination. As a young reader, she enjoyed fiction. One of her favorite characters was Jane Eyre, in the book of the same name by Charlotte Brontë. After completing high school in Trinidad, Roy studied nursing in Surrey, England, and she immigrated to Canada in 1972. She completed a bachelor of arts degree (with honors) in sociology at York University in 1987. A professor at York University encouraged her to write professionally, describing her writing as sensitive. One of her hobbies is coordinating clubs for children, so writing for children became her focus.
