ABSTRACT

Salkey was born in Colon, Panama, and grew up in Jamaica. He attended St. George’s College in Kingston and Munro College in St. Elizabeth and earned his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of London. He received the Thomas Helmore Poetry Prize in 1955 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 1960. Salkey taught English in a London comprehensive school and in 1952 became a radio interviewer and scriptwriter for BBC External Services.
