ABSTRACT
Charles was born in Trinidad, in the Caribbean, the second of two children. As a child, he loved listening to stories told by his grandparents and reading books of folk tales. His maternal grandmother was his main influence in becoming a storyteller. At school, he began composing stories, and he published his first piece at the age of twenty-one in a national newspaper in Trinidad.
