ABSTRACT

The author was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Emecheta displayed advanced intellectual ability at an early age and attended Methodist Girls’ High School from age ten. After winning a scholarship to study in England, she followed her husband, by an arranged marriage, to London, and they later separated. Emecheta was left to support their five children. She eventually earned an honor’s degree in sociology from London University. Her persistence in writing and submitting manuscripts resulted in the publication of a number of her articles in the New Statesman.
