ABSTRACT
British biologist and populariser of science. He was the son of a Scottish physician and physiologist educated at Eton and New College, Oxford, who was converted to socialism while serving with the Black Watch in World War I. He returned to New College thereafter until 1922; he then spent ten years at Cambridge before settling at University College, London, where he taught genetics until 1950, when he went to India.
