German astronomer and astrologer. Kepler was born to a poor family in the "free city" of Weil der Stadt in the Holy Roman Empire, but obtained a good education thanks to a scholarship provided by the Duke of Würtemburg. At the University of Tübingen he was taught astronomy by Michae lM̈¨stlin, one of the very few Copernicans active as a teacher, and became a convert to the heliocentric theory.
