ABSTRACT

In the movie Soul Food, scenes of fried chicken, ham, candied yams, green beans, collard greens, creamed corn, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, and sweet potato pie reminded us of not only how good soul food tastes, but how good it feels to come together with family to share Sunday dinners. Unfortunately, although soul food tastes good, and sharing it with family feels good, the way it is prepared makes it unhealthy. The diseases and deaths that result from its consumption are devastating African American families and communities. Interestingly, in the movie Soul Food, Big Momma suffers and dies from diabetes, a health condition that may be attributed to the soul food diet.
