ABSTRACT
The natural environment and wildlife have provided the backdrop to most South African children’s literature and have often been its focus. Traditional oral literature in the indigenous languages is rich in this subject matter; as for written literature, the very first children’s poem set in South Africa was a protest, by the English writer Reverend Isaac Taylor, at the hunting of ostriches. 1 The interest continues unabated.
