ABSTRACT
One of the most enduring motifs in South African culture is the San. They made their appearance in the earliest records of whites who reached the shores, and, centuries later, the new democratic state that followed the elections in 1994 honored them by incorporating reproductions of their art, as well as wording the motto in one of their languages in the new national coat of arms.
