The governess was a figure familiar to Victorian society and is equally well-known to readers of nineteenth-century English fiction. The governess began life before the rise of Victorian society, but it was during these years that she reached a high point in terms of importance, power, and familiarity, though her heyday was equally characterized by problems, contradictions, and crises.
