ABSTRACT
In the years from about 1980 onwards there were a number of important changes in universities and colleges in Britain. From the point of view of those interested in dyslexia the most dramatic change was the increase in the number of dyslexic students in higher education: in 1981 there were probably around 100 students at university in Britain who were recognised as dyslexic; in 1994 there were around 5,000; in 2003 there were more than 42,000, including nearly 4,500 postgraduate students (see note 5.1). In response to this rise in numbers there has been a rise both in the public’s understanding of dyslexia and in the availability of support for dyslexic students in schools, colleges and universities.
