ABSTRACT

DNA testing is an extremely powerful technique which allows various types of information about an individual to be obtained. DNA analysis can be used in crime investigations, for revealing disease predisposition, can provide information about the health of the individual, the skin colour and ethnic origin of the person can be deduced from analysing ancestry informative markers, while comparing two or more DNA samples can be used to determine the degree of relationship between people. The possibility of using DNA samples for obtaining information about a person which is irrelevant to crime investigation but, at the same time, is very sensitive from the privacy point of view poses many ethical questions. Even the way DNA samples and the data derived from them are used for criminal investigation pose legitimate concern to the general public and human rights groups.
