ABSTRACT

Amadeus is a new co-educational community school for pupils aged 3 to 11. It provides places for children living on a recently built and rapidly expanding housing estate. The school offi cially opened in January 2000, with a pupil intake of 116, which had risen to 368 when we fi rst visited the school in 2003. By 2005 the total number on the roll was 411, and it seems likely that these fi gures will become more steady now a full cohort of children has gone through the school from reception to Year 6. In its fi rst few years, the school experienced a high degree of mobility amongst its pupil population, although this too is likely to become more settled once numbers stabilise. In its fi rst Ofsted report in 2001 the inspectors described Amadeus as ‘a good school, which, in a short time, has established itself at the heart of this new community’.
