ABSTRACT

Harbour Community School is a co-educational comprehensive school for students aged 11 to 16. It admits eight forms of entry, there are 240 students in each year group and the school has about 1,200 students on the roll. The catchment area of the school is predominantly white working class and there are high levels of poverty with many of the students living in economically diffi cult circumstances. The school reports signifi cant social and health problems in the neighbourhood including TB, HIV infection and drug addiction. Most students come from the local community except for the ‘resourced provision’ for students designated as having profound and multiple learning diffi culties, which serves the whole LA. Table 7.1 provides some demographic details of the school and LA population for one recent cohort of Year 11 pupils.
