ABSTRACT

Can you remember when you learned to read? It was probably a long, long time ago. Over time, you will have got more confident, though you might still find that reading aloud without a chance to practise can be difficult. Reading is something very few of us take past the basics. There’s no advanced reading course at high school; it’s assumed you learned to read by the time you’re about 10 and after that you just get on and use that ability. Yet reading is something that is central to studying. If you can learn to read better (we’ll worry about what ‘better’ means when it comes to reading in a minute) then you will be able to study better. No question. Reading is absolutely central to studying – so let’s make things better.
