ABSTRACT

Those words formed part of an article written to commemorate one of the more significant breakthroughs in sporting history: the first day as captain of South Africa’s cricket team of Ashwell Prince, a Cape Coloured. The headline was: ‘Coronation of Prince is an inevitable end to story of changed world’. The line chosen even more adroitly by the sub-editor to highlight, via a pullout quote, was: ‘The death of apartheid is all about the power of sport’. To anyone with aspirations to write about sport for a newspaper, it is important to recognise this micro-context in order to understand and appreciate that journalism is not a solo endeavour.
