ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the role of special schools in providing outreach, inreach, and training and consultancy. It examines ways in which special schools support mainstream schools in educating a wider range of pupils with SEN than they might presently. Next, the chapter looks more specifically at inreach and outreach. I then consider special schools offering training and consultancy, including in the area of curriculum development to others. Within this context, I look at the relationship between local authorities and independent and non-maintained special schools.
