ABSTRACT

Performance measurement easily becomes a weak activity, and is meaningful only when performance is viewed from various perspectives, because justice is then done to the multiple valued nature of the professional’s products and services. Variety, then, is an important design principle, which may be elaborated in three ways:

• When production figures are available, the next question is who is able to give meaning to the figures; in other words, who has ‘meaningmaking rights’? Variety means that there is no monopoly on giving meaning, and that multiple interpretations of production figures are allowed (Section 2).
