ABSTRACT

Jim andDella are a loving but poor couple in “TheGift of theMagi” byO. Henry.44

Christmas is approaching and neither can afford a gift even remotely appropriate for their beloved. Yet, both have a possession in which they take great pride. Jim has inherited a gold watch from his father, which he had inherited from his father; Della has wonderful hair, “a cascade of brown water”. And so, love triumphs over poverty. On Christmas Eve, Jim and Della surprise each other: Jim proudly presents Della with a set of combs for her hair. Della, in turn, bought a gold chain for Jim’s watch. Only, to buy the combs, Jim had to pawn his watch, while Della cut and sold her hair to buy the chain.
