China and South Korea’s future strategy

For almost all of Korea’s history, China has been either its only significant

neighbour or at least the most influential one. In many ways, the twentieth century, which saw Japan and then the United States (for the South) achieve

pre-eminence in Korean affairs, is an abnormal interruption of the Sino-

centric life of the peninsula.
