ABSTRACT

The fashion industry, with its preoccupation with extremely thin female models, is often accused of presenting the wrong body image to young girls who, in striving to achieve this image, may engage in unhealthy eating habits and put themselves at risk of developing eating disorders (e.g. Brownell, 1991; Davis et al., 2000). It is perhaps ironic, therefore, that a member of a high-profile media fashion family should have recently written about her struggle with an eating disorder (Lauren, 2005). Jenny Lauren, niece of well-known fashion designer Ralph Lauren, admitted to having suffered from the eating disorder bulimia, coupled with excessive exercise.
