ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the scope for transferring policy learning from the European Union (EU) to domestic arenas. It focuses on the experience of managing European regional policy through the distributive instrument of Structural Funds in support of the EU’s efforts to promote economic and social cohesion. It is important to note from the outset that the EU’s emphasis when promoting cohesion is predominantly on the regional as opposed to the city level. However, we contend that this regional experience of managing regeneration can provide fruitful and illuminating lessons that may be applicable and transferable to the city context.
