ABSTRACT

The primary goal of any workplace is to produce goods and services, but the Network’s research has confirmed that it is also an important location for teaching and learning. As Chapter 1 has already indicated, however, there are significant differences in the sectoral and organizational contexts within which workplaces sit. In this regard, the Network’s case-study findings illustrate the uneven quality of the learning environments that are being created in workplaces and highlight the important task of making sense of such differences if we are to contribute to improving practice. The purpose of this chapter is to outline how the data on apprentice learning collected in Project 3 generated a conceptual framework that can be used to analyze the nature and quality of different approaches to apprenticeship as well as workforce development and organizational learning environments and cultures more generally.
