ABSTRACT

The late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have seen a rise in performance that draws on and incorporates technologies that were new in the period. ‘Multimedia’ performance has become recognised as a distinct genre of work and companies such as The Builder’s Association from New York are renowned for performances that blend live action, film, TV and computer-generated imagery. Such work is seen to be experimental, questioning the boundaries of performance practice and opening up new possibilities for staging and reception. This chapter explores work that interweaves technology and performance and examines the problems and possibilities that are inherent in this form of practice.
