ABSTRACT
To control the spread of the epidemic, current AIDS prevention programs emphasize four behavioral recommendations: condom use, mutual monogamy, partner reduction, and treatment for other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In order to promote behavioral change, prevention programs use a variety of communication channels such as mass media, printed material, peer educators, and health professionals. Typically, these communication channels are used to increase awareness of the need to adopt the behavioral options, to teach the skills needed to practice the behaviors (such as negotiating and using a condom), and to create peer support for, or positive public opinion about, the reduction of risk behaviors.
