ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the purpose is to look deeper into rapists' construction of reality by examining the goals they learned to accomplish through sexually violent means. The distinction between admitters and deniers is not important here, as the objective is to focus on the essential question of what men gain from rape (regardless of their excuses and justifications) in a contemporary sexually violent society. This chapter will demonstrate that for many sexually violent men the motivations to rape are not irrational, subconscious, and uncontrollable but, rather, overt and deliberate. For some men, rape is used as a method of revenge and punishment; for others, it is a bonus added while committing another crime. In other cases, rape is used to gain sexual access to unwilling or unavailable women, and for some, it is a source of impersonal sex and power. Rape is also a form of recreation and adventure for some men and, finally, it is an act that makes them "feel good." Indeed, what these men tell us is that from their perspective, rape is a low-risk, high-reward act.
