ABSTRACT

Shortly after his election to the presidency, George Bush gave a speech to an assembly of the American Association of University Women in which he strongly condemned violence against women. The next day at a news conference, referring to the AAUW speech, a woman reporter asked the president if he intended to give such a message to gatherings of men. Women, she correctly observed, already know about violence against them. We don't need your message, Mr. President, talk to the men.
