ABSTRACT
The main corpus of this essay was published in 1986. The 1986 text is reproduced here in its entirety, with minor editorial changes that omit redundant ethnographic background material. There are three addenda in the present version, all of which amplify the ethnographic account in ways that would not have seemed relevant to me a decade ago.
