ABSTRACT

Composed in 1983 and published in Spanish language editions in 1983 and in 1992, this essay appears here for the first time in English. It records for the most part historical data pertaining to the Chamula diaspora, dating from at least the mid-nineteenth century. Internal migration ranks with (and sometimes is in tandem with) conversion to Protestantism among the most important sources of culture change relevant to Chamula and other Maya communities as they move into the twenty-first century.
