ABSTRACT

Assessing RQ is what this chapter is all about. There are two methods for assessing RQ. The first is the inquiry-based evaluation method and the second uses the RQ Questionnaire, which we have developed to provide you with a more definitive assessment of the level of RQ in your family business. The two methods go hand in hand, and though they can be used separately, together they provide a much more reliable assessment. Advisors/consultants working with family businesses may find in the inquiry-based evaluation a method for assessing the RQ status of a family business client when the RQ Questionnaire cannot be used. For families in business the inquiry-based evaluation provides a way of exploring and discussing aspects of their relationship that are problematic and for which they have been unable to get more than a vague handle on. Being able to understand the reasons for both problems and successes is key to preventing the former and capitalizing on the latter. The inquiry-based evaluation focuses attention on the reasons, thanks to the understanding gained through RQ.
