Libertarian socialists1 were by far the worst underachievers among twentieth-century anticapitalists. Even so, I count myself a libertarian socialist, and believe “we” have the most to offer those fighting to replace the economics of competition and greed with the economics of equitable cooperation in the century ahead. I realize this means I have a lot of explaining to do about why libertarian socialists did so poorly during the last century if we truly were more insightful than others. I should begin by admitting that not even I find the explanations that follow completely satisfying. No doubt many readers will find them even less so.2 Nonetheless, I try to explain why I believe libertarian socialists have much to offer in the years ahead, if we can overcome reasons for past failures.
