ABSTRACT

As we have seen, the topic of Folkways's finances is a tantalizing one. On one hand, it would seem an obvious place to start any discussion about production and distribution within a business. However, in the case of Folkways, the financial information is also the most difficult to trace, when it exists at all. Even though much of the financial information is spotty, it is truly incredible that some sense of the financial life of Folkways is available at all. There are various points in time where a brief, but surprisingly complete, financial picture is available. Better still, in addition to the Folkways data, documentation also exists for much of Moe's own business finances, as well as the closely related distribution company, Pioneer Record Sales. The existence of financial data on these three areas at the same point in time provides a virtually unprecedented look at the interplay between two associated businesses and the man who ran them.
