ABSTRACT

561. Allmendinger, Julia, and J. Richard Hackman. "The More, the Better? A Four-Nation Study of the Inclusion of Women in Symphony Orchestras." Social Forces 74 #2 (December 1995): 423-60. The authors set out to answer the question: "What happens when members of one identity group enter an elite institution that historically has been dominated by another?" The groups in question are men and women and the institution is the symphony orchestra. Using data from the United States, the United Kingdom, the former East Germany, and the former West Germany, the researchers found that certain situations improve until the percentage of women in an orchestra reaches 50 percent; then the trends flatten out or reverse themselves.
