ABSTRACT

As Donovan (2003) argues, marital impasse is half of the subject matter of individual psychotherapy, if you construe the term broadly as the difficulty of partnership or relationship or being close to another human being. As I suggested in the introduction to part IV, I have come to agree that every such relationship has its single “fight,” and that the “fight” is an attempt by each partner to impose his “ideal” on the other and punish any shortcomings.
