Part Two Introduction

In the previous section, we have seen how Lawrence and Woolf expose the ideological implications embedded in the Victorian picture of domestic space as being maternal, asocial, harmonious, and permanent. In this section, I investigate the ways in which Lawrence and Woolf challenge other key components of the Victorian idea of home: the emphasis on protection, enclosure, and safety, components that sustain another domestic space as well, the nation.
